Agree with Unc.
Noise cancelling headsets take away the external frequencies (ie engine and wind noise) that (a) can damage your hearing and (b) are detrimental to concentration and cause fatigue. The Bose versions are expensive and fairly top of the line - they invented the technology where a signal 180 degrees opposed to the incoming signal is generated so that the incoming sound is effectively cancelled out.
However, there are now dozens of versions out there from other manufacturers that do the job nicely. Plug or Bluetooth into your phone and off you go. Doesn't in any way detract from your road awareness, but certainly reduces fatigue and noise.
I worked for a while for a company that installed this technology onto high-end biz jets. Smooth flying baby!!!! x
