re the outward trip... ring Brittany Ferries and get a booking for car only.

We have spare places in the cabins (plenty, assuming a Hedge didn't get around to scrapping his) that we've booked (quote my booking reference UM00275 If they need convincing)

I've pan-European breakdown cover via a Nationwide bank account (how good it is, remains to be seen!) and am getting a credit card off the back of it that doesn't charge for foreign transactions.
