Striping....the Old Skool Way.

I recently had to do something about the terrible paint on our 2002 SV, which had been badly painted before we bought it in 2006....some of the paint had for some reason never hardened properly and had become an insect graveyard.

I decided it'd be fun to do a proper striping job the old fashioned way ie with actual paint......and as I've never seen a Caterham or other Seven with the stripes running across the bonnet louvres, that was the objective...

The original paint was yellow, the new scheme was to be red Lotus Sports Racer spec triple stripes in red, over Pearl white.

Here ar a few pix taken during the process.

1/....make sure the panels are in their usual relationship (properly aligned) before striping tape is applied.

Alignement

2/ Cut lining tape so it stays aligned, while folding it into the louvres.....there are only 41 to do! (x 3)

Cut lining tape

3/ Don't do what I did....I made three big mistakes. I should have painted the whole car with WHITE primer, not grey. I should have painted all the white pearl first and put a light coat of varnish on to protect it from the marks of the lining tape. I should never have used black to stop the red bleeding through the white, applied on the excess red outside the masked stripes. Varnishing works better as a sealer.

Uneccessary black

So lets jump forward to today.....after many bad reactions caused by my poor planning, I finally got it 95% right.

Looks pretty good to me. I make a lot of small scale model aircraft so I can appreciate what you've been through re the masking and other associated issues.
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

Things have moved on. In February I trailed the car to the UK for a final setting up session on Emerald's dyno at their hq in Watton, near Norwish, and for an MoT. Emerald installed a three way switching software map specifically for the MoT and the car passed.

John got it up to 213bhp on the dyno but decided not to push it much beyond 8000rpm as it was clear from the figures that the fuel pump was failing....I had totally forgotten to fit an R500 pump, now dealt with. He said thet from the figures, it should top 220bhp on the new pump, and it showed exceptional torque from low down.

Great testament to Roger Fabry at Sabre Heads, Wisbech, who built the original VHPD Evo head in 2000 at Janspeed, and revamped the same head recently, with over length Colsibro guides and much more.

I've been using the car since Feb, in France, and it's a lovely thing, though rather violent, due to the Titan Phantom TBs.

I will get round to fitting Jenveys at some point, it'll make the low opening performance much smoother, as it is it's very 'on/off' and tends to want to kangaroo at small openings....you need to have a lightning quick left foot!

I made and fitted the aerodynamic 'chin piece' and carbon canards for my own amusement...

Seems to be impossible to post pictures at the moment....anyone know why?
