how hard/how much to change an engine s1 Elise?

as per the subject, really. I've got a potentially time consuming/undiagnosed noise and gasket (not head) failure in my std s1 k-series and wondered if anyone on here had an idea of an order of difficulty/cost before I start asking dumb questions to garages.

I have a S1 Elise, and have done a lot of work on the engine...
It's a bloody pain!
Never tried a full engine removal/replacement, but from the work I have done (exhaust, alternator, etc) I don;t think it would be an easy job.
(Certainly not compared to a 7 swap!)

Hopefully Uncle Albert will know more!

Any engine work on an Elise is tricky, could you remove the rear clam? I've seen a few pictures on SELOC where people have taken the engine out without removing the clam but there is a very big risk of damaging it.

I would imagine labour is the biggest cost, engines can be picked up on ebay relatively cheaply.

What sort of noise does it have and which gasket has failed?

You really would find it much easier with the clam off. You can then work on it 'comfortably' and chances of trashing the clam drop to zero.

yeah, I was fearing the whole clam off scenario. the noise is a tappety sound but not the tappets, so probably the little ends on one or four or both. the inlet manifold gasket is suspected to have gone too but not so bad as to cause major coolant loss.

right now I'm tempted to leave it to run to failure and then deal with it. if I was to do an engine swap what would you think, new standard engine or second hand river brm engine, box and lsd?
