Spring/dampers advice

Hi,

I am considering replacing front and rear springs and shocks as they look a little tatty and tired on my 1999 live axle.

Currently it's fitted with Bilstein which I think is the original set up, I've priced direct replacement and it appears on the expensive side

I have used GAZ on my previous car and found them pretty good value, has anybody had any experience, good bad or indifferent with various brands?

Any advice would be very welcome.

Nitron.....

Just googled them, not far from me but yes you are correct......way off my price bracket!

Bilstein price is my limit but ideally much cheaper.

Cheers

I would just say this is the one area that should not be scrimped on, 7's are all about handling.
If you drive a few back to back you would know what i mean, good, bad and give the bl**dy thing back
Tyres, suspension and set up =

I know what you mean and agree, I'm not intending on scrimping, I spent a lot of money on my previous car's set up but was curious on people's experience with various brands.

I'm actually happy with the current set up and would be happy to replace like for like however from my experience of GAZ I'm happy to save a few quid knowing that GAZ in theory should be as good however that's with a different car.

Ideally I would like feedback from any experience with GAZ or similar fitted to the 7?

Speak to Simon at Meteor Motorsport, he'll recommend various options around your intended budget, and not just fancy Quantum/Nitron shocks.

I would recommend Uncle Albert - www.7workshop.com
He's dealt with Eugene for years - and boy, does it handle!

The OE Bilsteins on my 20,000 mile SV were looking prematurely shagged but were still working fine, so I removed them along with the ARB and front wishbones and rubbed the lot down, then gave 'em a couple of coats of grey primer and then satin black.

I'd stripped the shocks too, so could do a proper job on them....I carefully removed the stickers and managed to replace them afterwards.....the front end now looks new!

Total cost...10 euros.

In my experience the Bilsteins are very good, perfectly ok unless you are contemplating spending all your time on circuits. I did need to replace them on my Elise but only after one collapsed.....

As long as the basics with your suspension are very good, spring rates and A arm bushes then Gaz or AVO will work very well.
Your Bilsteins are better made than either of the two mentioned, and if they are still working ok I would keep them.

I was running AVO when I was changing a lot of things on the car, I fitted needle roller bearings in all the A arms and with the AVO shocks it was really good.

Then I took three steps back by fitting some Nitrons, with a lot of time stripping and trying different shim stacks until I got it right now its very good.
If you do buy the cheaper ones the aluminium type each weigh about 2 lbs less.

Chris.

Cheers guys,

I may take the advice of Hal, remove & check them and if all ok spruce them up with some paint etc?

This will now be on the back burner though, major problem with potentially the diff which I think will be costly, will post another question for all you oracles out there!

Cheers
