I have hankered after an ali half door for a while and have knocked one up which for a first attempt is (i think) not too bad, but i am bracing myself for other opinions!

The notch allows shoulder room and plenty of space for steering wheel whirling..

The lower edge has a return on it to keep the updraft at bay and the profile means that the draft gently pushes the door in so (I hope) there is little chance of the poppers letting go. I used stronger spring poppers and made sure the leading edge had no gap.

Just needs a polish (or perhaps i make another one with some minor refinements (the top edge could be an inch lower and maybe slightly curved and the overall depth could reduce).

What do you think ?

Cheers from Bonn

Minty, that looks rather good!
Maybe you should go into production...

Ha!

Looks good and works brilliantly...

Okay, made to order!

The trick is whether the stud positions are consistent for all vintages, short cockpit, long cockpit, factory/ kit built.

My guess is that there is no guarantee that any 2 cars are identical and the poppers would need to be fitted per car... anyone have a view on that?

Perhaps Uncle Albert will be along in a minute...?

A Seven Speed we leave all poppers off our half doors as no two cars are the same.

Aha. Yup, as I had thought.
There is absolutely no stretch with the ali door so it has to be spot on!

Very nice, my only thought is when it rains, do you not get a lot of splash of the wheel arch?
Did you also do the half tonneau cover in Ali with the bonnet louvres?

The gap at the back is a concern and on the half door on the pictures the gap is too big so could be an issue.. I havent tested it in bad rain but the draught upwards is not immediately obvious.
Next one will be shaped to be closer to the rear wing shape.

Yes.. the louvred half tonneau was also home made and I love driving with it. Feels nicely enclosed.
