Hi guys am new to this 7 business. And had some questions about insurance, i know there are loads of forums with insurance questions but none that really help.
Anyway i'm 18 years old and i have a Caterham sigma 125 Monaco which i am expecting back from Caterham soon After i just finished building it. And i wanted to start using it fairly soon after i got it back, so i need insurance. So heres the question: does anyone know of any companies that have been known to insure 18 years olds on caterhams?
I have had a look but haven't been able to get any quotes.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Ps. Don't just tell me i wont get insurance.

Good question!
I first had my 7 when I was 19... I insured it with what is now REIS, and have used them ever since.
But, I have no idea if they will do that young any more

All I can suggest is what you have probably already tried - call all the specialist Caterham insurers...

Thanks for your reply. REIS was actually one of the first companies i tried. they said they don't insure people under 21!
it must be possible to get insurance somewhere or i would have thought Caterham would have told me when i bought the car,
or at least hoped they would.
anyway I'll just keep trying places.

You may have better luck with Adrian Flux or Footman James?

REIS have been fantastic as far as service is concerned and no issues with non standard cars
But under 21 is going to be tricky, fingers crossed you will find someone but the premium is going to hurt

Sorry i haven't been here but was very busy for while and then forgot about this, until last night when my father reminded me. Anyway I did manage to get a quote in the end, from a company called ' FluxDirect' for just £1500. But in the end did not go for it (after having to pay for IVA, first registration, tax, etc. And not forgetting a new wiring loom and fitting which on its own cost £000's, as i managed to the original one.) as i only have a certain amount of funds at the moment whilst i currently have no job.
so at the moment i'm just here thinking of driving it

I've got my fingers crossed for you!
It will all be worth it in the long-run.

But it shows how times have changed - I insured Eugene for the first time when I was under 21 - had no problems...
But that was some 30 years ago!

And good luck on the job-hunting front!

Yes that is what i keep telling myself! i have just got to be patient. Although I will be 19 in 2 months so hoping the price might drop to something i'm comfortable with.

Thank you, and hopefully i'll get somewhere soon, can't wait to take it out on the road.

(i'm not sure how i have lasted this long considering I ordered the car 22 months ago!)

P.S thanks for all your insurer suggestions.

Even though you are not using the car on the road I hope you have a policy that covers the car while its storage. A simple fire or theft from the garage could be very expensive with no insurance in place.

With regards to young owners and insurance back in the late 80's when I bought my first Seven a local 18 year old built a car and insured it for less than a regular hatch would have cost him. But a couple of years ago I was speaking to a 21 year old graduate at a sprint who was still unable to get cover. He relied on his mother to drive the car too and from events for him drive on track. Sure he said 25 was the age he could get covered.

After about 10 years with MSM I changed to A Plan this year. Spoke to a guy called Chris Chalk at the Thatcham office, very helpful and knowledgeable. The company are highly recommended on the Locost and Westfield sites. Fully comp on a 2002 2 litre Zetec Caterham for 2000 miles a year, £150 excess, £109 a year. Like all policies you never know how good they are until you need to claim, hope that never happens.

Hi yes the car is currently insured by father fully comp through DirectLine with £0 excess, no claims protection, legal cover, and guaranteed replacement car for only £180 a year. i did this mainly so we could take the car out and run it rather than just leave it in the garage.
also am hoping to insure it fairly soon, not sure i can wait until i'm 25.

I got mine last year (23 year old), with 1 years no claims bonus, one of the worst jobs to have (audio engineer on live events, just in case i take a famous singer in my car they want to charge a hell of a lot more as they are worth more). It costs me £340 with £100 excess fully comp on a 1.6l supersprint through Adrian flux.

Not sure this will help you but when I inquired about buying one whilst at uni Caterham did say to me check insurance before you get one as it might be very hard to find some that is affordable. the most expensive I got quoted was about £10,000,000

I wonder what the excess was?
