So, here's a bit of a competition...

Trying to find the different locations from the start of Steve McQueen's classic Le Mans film.
Note: All scenes now located!
See this MAP.

There are four different locations that are outside Le Mans town.
Those within Le Mans are already listed here: http://www.rjsmith.com/le-mans-then-and-now.html

Of the locations outside Le Mans town, two are known, the other two are not.

The first scene is unknown:

first scene

But, it should be easy to verify as the road has a particular set of curves.
Something like:

first scene map

The second scene is also very specific, with a 'hump' or bridge in the distance, and the old looking trees either side of the road...

second scene map

The third and fourth scenes are known as both are in the town of Fille...

Well, bloody hell - TeaBag has only gone and found the first scene location!

Obvious the google earth camera is a very different lens, and is not at the side of the road, and the bridge is rather different, but I really think he's bloody found it!
Even the Arial shot from Google Maps is close to my 'map sketch'...

So, just this one to find now...
It looks too narrow to be any part of the Mulsanne road

To revive the search for the missing location I can say that they released a documentation about the making of. They actually recreated some scenes from the movie and this particular one was shot here in the documentary.

That doesn't meant it's the original spot, but that would be a point to discuss about.

Mmm...
Based on the documentary, that looks to be the missing location.
But, is it the same place...?
We have searched the D338 a lot, and not sure... a lot has changed since the film was shot.
What is the name of the documentary?
This one?
https://greenlightinternational.tv/making-le-mans/

With a bit of Google Earth searching, you can see from this image taken in 2017 showing the same house.
But really not sure it is the correct location.

D338

And Albert, it is just south 'that' roundabout... on the way to Le Bounty, from the Mulsanne bar!

The documentary is called "Steve McQueen: The Man and Le Mans" from 2015
It should be available on Prime Video. Otherwise you can find it on YouTube I think. Search for "Princ Martin" (<-Channel) "Steve McQueen Muz a Le Mans"
The scene I'm talking about starts at Minute 16 with Chad McQueen behind the wheel I think.
But you're right, it still doesn't look like the exact same spot even if they had widened the road. The Terrain next to the road still looks quite different. In the movie there seems to be a visible trench on the left side in the background which I can't find on any part of the Mulsanne road today. Moreover, he seems to steer slightly left by the end of the scene which wouldn't excactly fit to the doc's spot.

But apart from that, I found out that McQueen lived in Château de Viré-en-Champagne during filming Le Mans. That may explain the choosen spots for the opening as they are basically located on his way to the race track

And there is something else to add concerning the Mulsanne road: Quite a few houses around there look older than 1970

Another interesting fact: in the documentary there is some footage of McQueen leaving a sort of Restaurant or Hotel in his 911S. That was taken in front of the Ricordeau in Loué

Would be interesting to see an old map of the N338, south of Mulsanne...
Might spot changes that link back to the original road in the film.

After thinking about it again it becomes evident that most likely the N338 isn't part of the movie opening. Because it still is the main road to Tours I don't think the character of the road will change completely south of Mulsanne to a tiny narrow road. Therefore the road from the movie doesn't even have a central reserve.
Here are two pictures from 1969 that show the end of the Mulsanne straight before the cars turn right towards Arnage. One from a spectator's (#1) and one from a drivers (#2) point of view.

In the scene from the film there appears to be a bridge in the background.
Nothing like that on the D338...
But as with Scene 2 above, bridges do get replaced.

Absolutely.
Could be just a bridge over a stream but also a railway crossing or something else.
However, we stay tuned💪🏻
