We had a power cut today and as Lynn was working from home, and she can't do anything without the 'net, we decided to go for a walk whilst the electrickery was being restored.

Two miles into the four-and-a-bit traipse, it started to rain heavily and I was reminded of that bar on day two in Spain and the joy that being soaked to the skin doesn't bring... it also reminded me to enquire what coats you chaps have.

I like the compactness of my current coat, that the hood can be folded into the collar but the fact that it offers no weather protection at all anymore limits its usefulness as a Waterproof!

I assume you took refuge in the nearest Fullers establishment?

Col, Happy to chat with you about this at some point, as I come from the outdoor clothing industry. You have to look at what you want for the primary use, then it's really a matter of cost, Gore products being more expensive, proprietary waterproof technologies being less expensive, for driving you don't need something that is hugely breathable as you aren't moving about a lot, most high end shells probably don't have folding hoods & have large helmet compatible hoods (for climbers) which act like a parachute, some cycling jackets can be good as they have a high neck & shorter body which is better for driving, I tend to use a soft shell when it's not raining to keep the wind out then I have a few different waterproof Jackets a mix of cycling, outdoor & lifestyle. I'd suggest going onto Snow & Rock, Cotswold Outdoor & Chain Reaction Cycles websites as a start. key features you need: Waterproof, Breathable, stowable hood

I lied!
Those above are 'other' waterproofs I have...

Those used in Spain/Portugal are:

Hello I'm new to the forum.

I use the car during the winter and have a Barbour Durham jacket for bad weather. Not as light or packable as more modern materials but very wind and waterproof. Admittedly not very breathable but for me not a problem when driving. I rarely carry passengers so it lives in the passenger footwell.

I was wondering what aeroscreeners wear when the rain comes...

I would suggest that a jacket with a hood is no good for Aeroscreening or driving without sidescreens they tend to inflate like a parachute or uncontrollably flap around

A hood can be useful when 'stopped', or just standing around in rain..
I just tuck the hood into the jacket when driving, if it is not stowed in the collar where it normally lives.
