I am in the process of replacing both front wishbones and decided to replace both trunnions at the same time. They are all genuine Caterham parts and upon delivery I noticed that both left & right trunnions have the position of the grub screw in a different location and longer.

Initially I assumed perhaps this was an "Upgrade" however when attempting to fit them because of:

A. The position of the bush grub screw is to the side and not at the bottom and as such it now fowls the brace on the wishbone and as such is unable to have full movement.

B. As the grub screw is much much longer point A above is worsened.

Both part numbers & manufacture correspond so I contacted Caterham and was told effectively the manufacturer has produced all of them in this fashion, albeit in small numbers in this manner. Who knows why?

I have been recommended in either cutting the grub screw to allow full movement & obviously chamfer off the end in order to grip the bush or use the old screws. (Haven't checked if it will still fowl the wishbone)

Has anybody else experienced this anomaly with a new part? And also.....I'm sure this topic has been discussed before but should I use gear oil or greese?

I must admit I have always used greese but if I'm supposed to use oil is there a reason, what's the difference?

Don't remember my old trunnions having anything like that...

The trunnions on both of my Lotuses never had a grub screw or a bush inserted. One always fitted the trunnion using a trunnion kit (2 x steel inserts plus washers and the 'nylon' or 'plastic' bushings).
and... Always use EP80 oil
