Seem to have an intermittent issue with starting and its really bugging me now

A good number of months ago my car died on a run under power. Pulled over jumped out had a visual check nothing out of the ordinary. Jumped back in and "click" no starter, AA out recovered home. Click fix of new relay and starter jumped back to life but engine was playing ball, no spark. Attempted to start the car on a off over a period of a few months (it was in hibernation for winter) nothing, AA out, much head scratching just the offer of a tow to a garage, not much help on a sunday.

A little while passes, thumbed the started when passing her in the garage and she burst into life . Ran her about for a few weeks, got her serviced then a week or so later, nothing again.

Where would people suggest looking? Guessing it might be a dodgy earth? Coil?

Any help greatly appreciated

Can you define better the 'not starting' definition...
Does it turn over really well (not sluggish)?
Is there just no spark - ever?
Is there a spark, but no firing?
What ECU is it? (I doubt there is a coil as such...)

Would help a lot

Have you checked the crank sensor and connection?

Turns over very easily, strong battery
No spark at all (apart from the two weeks or so it ran again!)
Standard mbe ecu
Changed out the crank position sensor, no luck

Sounds like ECU or coil-pack to me.
Possibly one of the connectors to the ECU?
Or even power feed to the ECU?

Sounds like a connection somewhere due to the issue being intermittent.
Continuity test from A to Z with a multi meter of all connections could be the best foot forward.
Or
Book it in to Uncle Alberts

Ah - no...
You'd need to swap it out with another unit - can you borrow one?

Uncle Albert is The 7 Workshop...
Where are you located - there must be a friendly owner near by.

I would check for an intermittent connection first - it really does sound like that, as Hatter suggested.

I've found when I have had this issue once or twice I have worked round every connection including earths disconnected them and then sprayed with some contact cleaner (currently using motor brush cleaner) and for me it's cleared the issue. Mines 14 years old and I am sure some of the connectors get corroded with age.
