As of 01 October 2014 when you notify the DVLA of the change of ownership the VED is automatically refunded to the seller. You don't have to sent the disk back as you did in the past and many buyers are now finding themselves pinged as driving an untaxed vehicle despite having what appears to be a valid disc on the screen.

By law you must tax any vehicle you purchase before driving it on the road. Dead easy on the interweb, takes minutes using the reference on the V5C and a suitable debit/credit card.
