Seen this many times, but for those who haven't.....

Sunday 13th October on ITV from 10:20pm to 12:20am

Bafta-winning documentary about the life and career of Brazilian Formula One champion Ayrton Senna,
which was cut tragically short in 1994 by a fatal accident during a race.
The film draws on archive footage of his arrival on the grand prix scene in 1984,
through rivalry with fellow Formula One driver Alain Prost, to his untimely death at the San Marino Grand Prix.

I remember the day he died, I can even remember what I was doing at the time of the crash, amasing how the memories get set in stone....

Thanks for the heads-up Westy, I'd like to watch that again.
Also worth getting the DVD for the excellent bonus interviews.

I won't watch it as it's so biased against Prost.

It was always destined to be, as it was all about Senna.....

Although I respect him for his wins and championships, I found his method of achieving that not exactly sporting, I saw the same with Shuewy as well, now I realise you have to "be" a certain type of person to be successful but Senna to my mind took it a bit far at times.... I still enjoy the footage of him though..

Personally I think Senna was a thug. When he admitted to taking Prost out to win the championship he should have been stripped of the title and banned from F1 for good. He alone bought the sport into disrepute by his actions and Schumacher copied them. No driver before had ever resorted to those tactics to win. To me he was the worse thing that ever happened for F1. Why a man blessed with his ability should drive in such a way beggars belief.

To some degree I agree with you Toby, prior to seeing the full movie I just thought he was some sort of driving god ( having not really followed F1 in any detail before) , but the movie shows more than perhaps they wished in that respect, because after watching it my estimations went down an awful lot... You are correct about Shu as well, his move on Damon ( i forget the event, but he hit damon and took himself out, winning the C'ship in the process) was well calculated and if not pre-planned was certainly intentional. Dirty driving should not be rewarded as you say. As a driver he was so focused on the task at hand, just watching the onboard of Monaco is an example of that , it's this I respect him for , not the dirty driving...

It was Adelaide in 94 that the cobbler took out Hill. As regards Senna I can't watch any of his diving without thinking he was dirty. He was a very religious man and I think that was part of his problem as well. He believed he had some divine right to do what he did.

LOL, funny you should say that, that was something I picked up on as well, about the god bit, I think there is an interview where Prost says something like "He believes in god and thinks he can't kill himself" or something along those lines.... I thought what an odd thing to say.....Mind you believing in god , found him finding him sooner than perhaps he would have liked.....

Prost did say that he wasn't willing to die to win the championship although Senna was. He also said Senna viewed racing as some sort of computer game where if it went wrong it would just reset to its default settings. The journalist Mike Doodson, who knew Senna well in his early day, fell foul of him by questioning his beliefs and the way it should have compromised his very unsavoury antics on the track. Senna basically blanked him afterwards.

Well without bringing too much religion into this ( always creates tension) He got what he was deserved then, not a god fan myself, but each to their own..... Belief in anything that deep is bound to cause issues in real life... Shame because I would like to think I had the "balls " to drive a hard as him, but then again my morality would stop me I guess.

I'm no god fan either. Religion goes against any concept of fairness in my book possibly the only exception being Buddhism but then I look like Buddha

Science and good old engineering is my religion, hasn't failed me yet... ( touch wood) Never really seen why believing in what is a non entity essentially is such a big deal, it creates wars , kills people and all manner of other atrocities.... give me a good science book and I'm happy....

Anyway Make your own mind up Sunday night....

Good spot
Don't miss it - though I'm certain all posters on this forum would have already seen it. I thought the film was fair to all concerned, to succeed/make it the top in whatever line of work you'll always have your detractors, and make enemies along the way - AS was an insanely focussed man, the film highlights this well - Prost was unlucky to have such a person to compete against. F1 is and always has been full of 'nice' drivers who've never been champ, RB & MW are the 2 most recent examples, Prost however was champ even though he was not as focussed as Senna because of other factors, all shown in the film - he was the best of the rest at that time IMO. If you ain't seen the film its a must watch, ev1en for folks not in love with F1, coz of the real personalities and characters involved, a real life soap opera, with a predictable tragic conclusion Make mine a Magners
