Ok well this idea just died. £8000 plus vat to ship eight cars to the Italian Lakes ONE WAY!

Plus flights etc....forget it.

So what's plan B?

Plan A did strike me as ambitious but well done on doing the legwork and research Hedge...

Presume a more practical plan is to drive to a ferry, take the ferry to somewhere, drive to another ferry over the course of a few days, get that ferry back to the UK and then drive home from the ferry.

If so, where do ferries go to? Spain/France to the south; Holland/Scandinavia (too cold, given the obligation of aeros?) to the east; Ireland to the west and nowhere really to the north?

On that basis, I like the idea of Ireland... am familiar with their beer but what's the food like?

Hedge, thanks for doing all the research!

Ireland has more speed cameras per square area than anywhere else in Europe...

Thanks Hedge for investigating the car transporter. Shame that's not a goer.

Can't really go wrong in rural France.
Would it be too boring to re-run last years Brittany blat with a few tweaks? -- It was truly Epic.

Or ferry to Bilbao/Santander -> try to better avoid the main roads encountered in 2014 -> Pyrenees -> Millau -> Up through France, staying at that fab B&B in Dordogne -> Le Havre. 2 nights at each stop to rest and explore the area.

France really does offer it all in terms of weather (usually), food & wine, friendly locals, assuming Le Pres can find more like those he took us on in July, EPIC roads and insufficient speed cameras to worry about (or were we just lucky?)

So I like Teabag's idea a lot... (especially if that could that be augmented with some time in Normady looking at D-Day-related places and stuff)

We could do a ferry to Bilbao/Santander, either spending time in/around the Douro Valley/Portugal/Spain, and then ferry back...
Or, same ferry, and then a decent route through France back to Cherbourg/Le Havre...

Need to run some schedules to see what mileage we can do in a given amount of time, allowing for the ferry time, etc.

How many days away are we looking at?
I'm flexible, obviously

Spent ten days in Porto earlier this year - lovely part of the world, though was on foot, so no idea what the roads are like... food and wine excellent though!

Ok - this is an example of what 'could' be done...
This (very rough) route is 1500 miles, which means 250 miles per day, with one night stop-overs. Just an example of one possibility...

Portugal_France

That is a lot of driving though, with no rest days or double nights in any one place, so no local sightseeing...

Like the Riems stop idea Frank
My preference is a 6 day trip (not including overnight ferries) with 3 stops, 2 nights at each. Then work a route around that. Eugene, fancy meeting for a beer on Sunday to discuss?
